Is the Congress party taking a risk in Punjab by rejecting Navjot Singh Sidhu’s resignation?

It is difficult to understand what is happening in the Congress party and why it is happening because the party itself does not know why whatever is happening, it is happening. An important meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) is going to be held in New Delhi today, in which many important decisions are likely to be taken. By which the direction and condition of the party can be determined. The most important decision among them is the discussion and appointment of the permanent president of the party. It is to be known that for more than two years, Sonia Gandhi has been handling the work of Congress party as interim president.

Just two days before the CWC meeting, the party high command calls Punjab State President Navjot Singh Sidhu to the party headquarters. Sidhu has an hour-long conversation with two central leaders – KC Venugopal and Harish Rawat – at the Congress headquarters on Thursday evening. Sidhu was appointed state unit president by the party in the month of July and late last month he sent his resignation to the high command in protest against some appointments made by Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi.

Why was there a delay in rejecting Sidhu’s resignation?

For almost a fortnight, the party remained paralyzed in a crucial state with only four months left for the next assembly elections to be held. Because even Sidhu himself did not know whether he would continue as the president or that his resignation had been accepted. However, coming out of the meeting, Sidhu says that whatever decision the party takes will be acceptable to him. After a while Harish Rawat comes out. Rawat is the party’s national general secretary and is also in-charge of Punjab. Rawat says that the party president will take the final decision on Sidhu’s resignation. Which will be announced the next day i.e. on Friday. Rawat also told that Sidhu has been asked to return to Punjab and appoint office bearers of the state unit and district unit so that the party can start preparing for the assembly elections.

It is a different matter that there was no announcement regarding Sidhu on Friday. Now the question arises that if Sidhu’s resignation had to be rejected then why was a fortnight’s time wasted for this. Whereas in early January, the Election Commission can duly announce elections in five states including Punjab and elections are likely to be held in mid-February. That is, every day is precious in view of the elections.

Musical chair is being played for the chair in the Gandhi family

Because staying in power in the state is going to prove to be a difficult task for the Congress party. And most importantly, why any decision about Sidhu had to be taken two days before the CWC meeting. Whereas the CWC, which is the highest committee of the Congress party, has to take important decisions. It only means that there is no need to get too excited about the CWC meeting. The rule of the Gandhi family will remain in the party and Rahul Gandhi will continue to take all the decisions as before.

It is possible that Sonia Gandhi will hand over the chair of the post of President to her son Rahul Gandhi. This game of musical chair between mother and son is going on for the last four years. Sonia Gandhi handed over the chair of the President’s post to Rahul Gandhi in 2017 after making a new history of being 19 consecutive Congress President. Rahul Gandhi becoming the president did not have much effect on the public. The party once again suffered a humiliating defeat in the 2019 elections and Rahul Gandhi submitted his resignation from the post of party president to the CWC. For the next three months no one knew whether Rahul Gandhi was the president or not, just like in Sidhu’s case. Eventually Rahul Gandhi’s resignation was accepted and Sonia Gandhi got the chair of the presidency. And this musical chair game is going to be seen once again in the CWC meeting.

Is Rahul Gandhi insulting CWC?

Inviting Sidhu to the party headquarters just two days before the CWC meeting and then telling him that you will continue as the president shows that Rahul Gandhi is confident that the decision will continue to be taken whether his mother remains the president or the chair is returned. The bar should be handed over to them.

Rahul Gandhi often criticizes Prime Minister Narendra Modi by saying that Modi is weakening the Constitution and constitutional institutions with his decisions. Now someone should tell that calling Sidhu two days before the CWC meeting and taking a decision about him is not an insult to the constitution of the Congress party and the institution like CWC? Perhaps this is what is said to eat and show ivory teeth.

One more thing, Congress party has rejected Sidhu’s resignation, his demand has not been accepted yet. Congress party does not know that Sidhu is like Mumbai rain, no one knows when it will start raining again. Sidhu himself does not even know when Sidhu will get angry again. And if he gets angry again after a few days, by then it will be too late and the defeat in Punjab will be confirmed.
