India expressed concern over the ongoing instability in Myanmar.

India (India) neighboring country Myanmar (Myanmar) expressed concern over the continuing instability. India said it would continue to support efforts aimed at restoring the democratic process in the wake of the February 1 military coup. In a statement made during an interactive conversation with the Special Envoy for Human Rights in Myanmar at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, India said developments in Myanmar have a direct impact on the country.

Special envoy Tom Andrews told the council that the situation in Myanmar had worsened after the coup and urged a change of course to prevent further human rights abuses and deaths. Andrews said the military junta and its forces have killed more than 1,100 people, arbitrarily detained more than 8,000 people and forcibly displaced more than 230,000 civilians, leading to internal detention in Myanmar. The number of people gone has exceeded half a million.

Thousands of Myanmarese citizens have entered India’s northeastern states, especially Mizoram and Manipur. As a democratic neighbor of Myanmar, India is committed to strengthen the process of democratic transformation in Myanmar. We have worked with various stakeholders to develop capacity on democratic systems and practices in Myanmar and we are continuing these efforts. Along with this, India has also provided medical assistance to Myanmar regarding the corona epidemic.
