The Congress Working Committee (CWC) on Saturday decided that the election of the party president will be held from August 21 to September 20 next year. Meanwhile, in the meeting, there was a demand for Rahul Gandhi to be made the national president of the party again. The Working Committee also agreed on that. At the same time, Rahul Gandhi thanked everyone and said that he would consider it.
News agency ANI quoted sources as saying that Rahul Gandhi said, ‘I will consider. He also said that he needs clarity on ideology from the party leaders. Some leaders said that he should be made working president till the elections. Sources said that in the meeting, many leaders including Gehlot had urged Rahul Gandhi to take over the reins of the party once again.

In fact, the meeting took place in the backdrop of several leaders leaving the party in recent months, demanding dialogue within the party by leaders of the ‘G23’ group of Congress. The Congress Working Committee meeting was also important in the sense that the election of the party president has been pending for a long time. A few months ago, due to the corona virus epidemic, the election of the Speaker was postponed, which was earlier proposed in the month of June.
It was also decided in the CWC meeting that in view of the organizational elections, the Congress will run a membership drive from November 1, which will continue till March 31 next year. After this, by April 15, the list of all the members and candidates for the elections will be published by the District Congress Committees. Between April 16 and May 31, the presidents of Block Congress Committees and Booth Committees will be elected.
According to the announced program of organizational elections by the Congress, between June 1 and July 20 next year, elections for the presidents, treasurers, vice-presidents and executive committee of the District Congress Committee will be held. The meeting, chaired by Congress President Sonia Gandhi, was attended by former party President Rahul Gandhi, General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Channi and many other leaders.
Senior Congress leaders had raised the demand to call a meeting of CWC
Recently, senior Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Kapil Sibal had demanded to convene a meeting of the CWC. Azad had written a letter to Sonia Gandhi urging that an immediate meeting of the Congress Working Committee be convened to discuss matters related to the party. Sibal had also raised questions on the party leadership in the midst of the turmoil in the party’s Punjab unit and said that a meeting of the Congress Working Committee should be called to discuss the situation and organizational elections should be held.
