Today’s day is associated with a very important event of Indian politics. On this day in 1989, the party of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi had to resign from his post after the defeat. This defeat was not minor, but it was behind the biggest political scandal in the 1980-90 era, which is known as the Bofors scam. In fact, in the Lok Sabha before the 1989 general elections, the Congress had 404 seats out of 514, but just before the 1989 general elections, the Bofors incident took place and the Rajiv Gandhi government of the Congress had to face a crushing defeat.
He had to be satisfied with just 193 seats. Although the opposition also had only 110 MPs, the National Front of 5 parties together formed the government, whose leader was VP Singh. After this, on 29 November 1989, Rajiv Gandhi resigned from the post of Prime Minister.
What was Bofors scam?
In the year 1986, India signed a deal to buy 400 155 mm howitzer guns from Swedish company AB Bofors, which was worth about $ 1.30 billion. But in 1987, Swedish radio exposed corruption and brokerage in the Bofors deal. It was said in this disclosure that a bribe of Rs 64 crore was allegedly given in the deal. The matter escalated so much that Rajiv Gandhi’s government went away. However, no allegation of bribery could be proved in the court case against Rajiv Gandhi.
