Heat tolerant Wheat Varieties: Now emphasis will be given on heat tolerant and short duration wheat varieties. Wheat production has decreased due to heat in Haryana, Punjab and UP this year.
Wheat production has reduced in many countries due to climate change. North India has also been in its grip this year. Despite a good harvest, excessive heat and heat in March reduced the production of wheat. Due to this, its price in the market has gone above the Minimum Support Price (MSP). But, the government and scientists have started preparations from now so that such a situation does not happen next year. For this, the focus will be on Heat tolerant Wheat Varieties. There will also be emphasis on early maturing varieties. So that despite the high heat, production is not affected.
This year, heat wave has reduced the production of wheat, especially in Haryana, Punjab and UP. Its quality has also deteriorated. Till now the wheat sold at MSP used to contain only 6 per cent of dry and broken grains, but now the government has increased it to 18 per cent. The government has said that the weather conditions are beyond the control of the farmers, hence, they should not be punished for such a natural phenomenon.

How much has wheat production decreased
The production of 1113 lakh metric tonnes of wheat was estimated during the Rabi marketing season 2022-23. But the onset of summer (by the end of March 2022) caused a change in the texture of food grains in Punjab and Haryana due to heat wave. Wheat dried up. Due to which the yield declined. After this, the government estimated the production of 1064 lakh metric tonnes of wheat.
