Hours after being elected the new Chief Minister in BJP-ruled Gujarat, Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel, who was once again deprived of the post, said that he has seen many ups and downs. He said that he lives in the hearts of the people and no one can take him out of there. Addressing people during a function in Mehsana city on Sunday evening, Patel also said in a light-hearted manner that he was not the only one who missed the bus. There are many others like him.
Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani resigned from the post on Saturday and a meeting of party legislators was held at the BJP headquarters in Gandhinagar on Sunday, in which Bhupendra Patel was elected as the next chief minister. After this, there are speculations that Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel is unhappy with this. After Rupani’s resignation, Nitin Patel was considered to be the frontrunner in the race for the chief minister’s post. However, Patel said that these claims have no merit. He said that he had left the party office on Sunday only after taking permission from BJP’s Gujarat in-charge Bhupendra Yadav.
Party decides – Nitin Patel
When Bhupendra Patel went to meet Governor Acharya Devvrat to stake claim to form the government with Vijay Rupani, Nitin Patel was not with him. Nitin Patel said that there are many other people who missed the bus. I am not alone and therefore do not look at this development from that point of view. The party takes the decision. People make wrong speculations. I told Bhupendra Yadav (after the MLAs’ meeting) that I have to attend this program. If it was not important, I would not have come to inaugurate, but since it was very important, Bhupendra Yadav also gave permission.
I am in the hearts of my people, voters and party workers: Nitin Patel
Nitin Patel said these things while addressing the gathering after inaugurating a road and an oxygen plant set up at the Civil Hospital in Mehsana. He said that when I was coming here, many things were going on on TV. I want to tell you that as long as I am in the hearts of my people, voters and party workers, no one can throw me out, I was in opposition (under Congress rule) for a long time in the past.
Nitin Patel said that I am not bothered by speculation. Bhupendra bhai is our own. He invited me to inaugurate his office as an MLA. They are my friends. I don’t care what people say or think. But, I am not in danger. Why? Because of you, I exist for you.
Nitin Patel comes from Patidar community
Patel said he received several threats for his recent remarks that the Constitution and secularism will last as long as Hindus are in the majority. However, he also claimed that many big leaders supported him for those remarks. He said that I never say anything which can be easily dismissed. I have always acted as a shield to protect the government, officials, chief minister and state BJP chief. I withstood all the attacks, but never retaliated. I say what is right, even if many people don’t like it. There is still doubt on whether Nitin Patel will continue as Deputy Chief Minister in the next government led by Bhupendra Patel. Both these leaders belong to the powerful and politically influential Patidar community of Gujarat.
