Justice Ramanna, who started his career as a lawyer in 1983, was appointed as a judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court in the year 2000. Prior to his appointment as a judge in the Supreme Court in 2014, he was the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court.
Justice NV Ramana will become the 48th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
Justice NV Ramanna will be sworn in as the country’s 48th CJI on April 24, 2021. President Ramnath Kovind has given his consent in his name. CJI SA Bobde is retiring on 23 April and Justice Ramanna will take charge on the morning of 24 April. He will have a tenure of 16 months as the Chief Justice of India. Agricultural Laws and their Constitutional Validity
The debate on agricultural legislation has been going on in the country for some time. This important matter will come before Justice Ramanna. They have to hear the agricultural laws and their constitutional validity. Last year, the central government enacted three new agricultural laws to improve the agriculture sector, against which petitions are pending in the Supreme Court.
Constitution of Special Court for pending cases against Hon.
As CJI, Justice Ramanna will also have a case to set up a special court to hear pending criminal cases against MPs and MLAs. Currently, more than 4400 criminal cases are pending trial against the MPs and MLAs of the country. Out of this, more than 2500 cases are registered against the sitting MPs-MLAs.
Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act 2019 and Article 370
In the month of August in 2019, the Modi government at the center passed the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act from both houses of Parliament. The Act came into force from October 31, 2019. Apart from this, Article 370, giving special status to Jammu and Kashmir, was repealed by the Central Government through Parliament. Justice Ramanna as a CJI will hear the petitions filed in the Supreme Court against its validity.
Places of Worship Act (Place of Worship Act)
Justice Ramanna has to be heard on the public interest litigation filed against the Places of Worship Act. The Places of Worship Act-1991 has been challenged in a Public Interest Litigation, which says that the place of worship of any religion which has been in existence since independence cannot be converted into a place of worship of any other faith.
WhatsApp Privacy Policy Case
Recently, WhatsApp announced a change in its privacy policy, on which there was a lot of controversy. After this, the company postponed its decision for some time. A petition has been filed against this in the Supreme Court.

Jassis Ramanna, hearing this case, gave a detailed explanation on the federal structure in the welfare state. While implementing the National Food Security Act, he issued guidelines to help ensure the right to food for all in India and help achieve the goal of nutrition.
