Four people have been arrested for running a fake call center in southeast Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh area and duping several US citizens by posing as officials of Amazon’s technical support team. In order to earn quick money, Mohammad Mukarram Hussain (29), Arjun Singh Saini (32), Gagan Bhatia (30) and Shadab Ahmed (25) started a fake international call center and identified themselves as Amazon executives, police said on Saturday. By telling that he cheated many American citizens.

Police said that with the help of their associates, these people made calls using ‘Voice over Internet Protocol’ (VoIP). Efforts are on to nab other people.

10 mobile phones recovered

Ten mobile phones, one WiFi router, four laptops and two desktop computers have been recovered from them, police said. On the intervening night of 6 October and 7 October, the police received information about the fake call center at Shaheen Bagh.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Isha Pandey said, “Around 4.30 am the team raided the hideout where they found four people talking on the telephone with foreigners. International numbers were visible on his screen. On seeing the police party, he tried to run away, but was caught.

He told that the four have been arrested after registering a case. He said that during the investigation it was found that the accused had made such arrangements through technical means that the toll free number of their fake website was shown at the top when any search was done on the internet. During the search, victims were mainly US citizens who contacted them to register their complaints or get technical support.

They said they used to collect money from victims through Amazon gift cards to offer services and then through a trading platform.
