Their interest in this technology has also increased a lot. In Biofloc technology, instead of a pond, water is kept in a large water tank and fish is reared in it. A sufficient amount of oxygen is supplied in the tank through the aerator machine, due to which there is no shortage of oxygen to the fish and the growth of fishes (Fish Production) is good.
Women are doing fish farming by joining the group
This move in Odisha is part of an initiative by the state government to provide livelihood opportunities to women and make them self-reliant through Odisha Livelihood Mission (OLM). This step will help the women to earn around Rs 60,000 to 1 lakh through this method of fish farming. Fish farming is being done in Dhepaguda village under Sadar Panchayat of Bisamaktak block involving more than 40 women from several Self Help Groups (SHGs) like Maa Gayatri, Maa Santoshi, Maa Mangala and Maa Banjari. Under this step, these women were given training in fish farming in the first phase.
Five lakh rupees given to women for fish farming
After completing the training, Rs 5 lakh was sanctioned to the women for fish farming. With the sanctioned amount, the women have set up eight large tanks of 15,000 liters capacity for rearing fish. Two fans and four biofloc machines have been installed in the tanks for 24 hours oxygen supply. If the fish will get sufficient amount of oxygen from the machines, then their growth is good in the tank. In each tank, the women stocked 3,000 fingerling-sized fish. An OLM official said that in this technique the lobster is ready within 90 days. Whereas other fish take six months to prepare.
Training will be given for shrimp farming
The OLM officials have provided all the technical support and equipment to the farmers for cultivation in the first year and are also looking after the maintenance of the tanks. From next year onwards women will do farming independently. Rest of the women will be involved in fish farming in later stages. Apart from this, there are plans to train women in shrimp farming with a new method in the coming days, OLM field officer Biswajit Swain said.
