Shyamdhani Mahato, a farmer living in Itki, also moved forward with this thinking and has become a successful farmer today.

Shyamdhani Mahato used to cultivate vegetables like other farmers earlier. Then in the year 2000, he brought a change in his thinking and thought that everyone else does vegetable cultivation, something different should be cultivated. With this thinking, he started the cultivation of flowers. Then after that gathered information and started flower farming with marigold flower cultivation. He says that he was one of the farmers who cultivated flowers in Ranchi in the early stages.

Training taken from Indian Council of Agricultural Research

Shyamdhani Mahato told that for the cultivation of flowers, he took training in flower farming from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research located in Palandu, Ranchi. After this, with the help of the District Horticulture Officer, he took training in flower cultivation. Then there was cooperation from the National Horticulture Mission. Now seeing them, about 50 farmers of Bedo, Nagdi, Mandar of Ranchi are doing good farming.

Gerbera and rose are also cultivated

Shyamdhani Mahto says that after cultivating marigold flower, he made up his mind to cultivate other flowers and then started cultivating rose and gerbera. He has two poly houses of 500 meters square, where he cultivates marigold and gerbera. Apart from this, marigold flowers are cultivated in two and a half to three acres in a year, at present marigold flowers are planted in one and a half acres.

Flower farming is a little different from vegetable farming, in that there is no need to buy seeds once. If you plant a marigold flower, you can take flowers from it for three years, apart from this, plants can also be planted from it. Whereas seeds have to be bought every time for vegetable cultivation. This reduces the cost of floriculture

  • Flower farming takes less effort than vegetable cultivation, as well as less water is needed in it.
