Corona Vaccination (indicative picture)
Amid heavy rains in Tamil Nadu, the vaccination against COVID-19 has suffered a major setback. Even during the mega vaccination campaign run on Sunday, people of many districts could not reach the vaccination center. State officials launched the 8th mega vaccination campaign on Sunday, during which 50,000 vaccination camps were organized and people were vaccinated for 12 hours.
On Sunday, 15.8 lakh people were vaccinated in Tamil Nadu, surpassing the 305,000 mark recorded on Saturday. Health Minister M Subramaniam said that due to heavy rains in at least 15 districts, people did not turn up for vaccination. He said, ‘Our employees are going door-to-door to bring people to the vaccination camp today.’
72% people have taken the first dose
Subramaniam said, ‘Though cases of corona have definitely decreased here, but like America and Russia, cases of COVID-19 are still increasing around the world. So vaccination is the only solution. In Tamil Nadu, 72 percent of the people have received the first dose of the corona vaccine. Thiruvallur district tops the list of highest first dose administration with 75%.
Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan urged all those people who have not taken the first dose and whose second dose is pending. “At least 1.61 crore people are eligible to take the first dose and 71.15 lakh people have not taken the second dose,” he said.
71 lakh vaccines in state stock
Till Sunday, Tamil Nadu had around 71 lakh vaccines in stock for the vaccination drive. Two heavy rains since November 6 have hit Chennai and its adjoining areas and coastal districts, slowing down the pace of vaccination. In Chennai, the campaign was carried out at around 2,000 vaccination sites and Chief Minister MK Stalin personally inspected a medical camp in Villivakkam.
Earlier this week, M Subramaniam had said that the state government aims to vaccinate 100% of the population with at least one dose before the end of November. The state has planned three more weekend camps for November.
On Sunday, 805 cases of corona were reported in the state and 11 people lost their lives. The maximum number of 128 new cases were reported in Chennai while 125 cases were registered in Coimbatore.
