symbolic picture of whatsapp payments
This is important news for those using the instant messenger app WhatsApp. WhatsApp may very soon ask users for their identity card or ID proof. The demand for ID proof will be for those users who pay through WhatsApp app. There are many such payment apps, mobile wallets or mobile apps in the market which provide the facility of payment, but ID proof is not asked. Even apps like PhonePe and Google Pay are made for payment, but they do not ask the user for ID proof. WhatsApp is going to impose such a rule.
WhatsApp is one of the most popular platforms in India through which facilities like chat, call are availed. It has also started work on WhatsApp Pay. This payment option is running since few days. Last year, the National Payment Corporation of India (NCPI) had given permission to start payments in a phased manner. Earlier this year, WhatsApp started testing payments using a payment shortcut, which was done on the app. The user will not need to go anywhere else for this, but will get the facility of payment from the chatbox.
Since then, WhatsApp is preparing to make the biggest change ever. As per the APK teardown, WhatsApp may very soon ask its users to verify with ID proof. If the user wants to make payment through WhatsApp, he may be asked to verify the ID proof. A new string has been given in the beta version of WhatsApp v22.214.171.124 which points to the new verification system.
What is the facility in India and Brazil
In this string it is written – Your identity could not be verified. Try uploading the document again. It is also written – Verify your identity to continue making payments on WhatsApp. WhatsApp Pay is currently available in India and Brazil. In India, only mobile number is used to make payment. Whereas in Brazil, debit and credit cards have to be verified using Facebook Pay.
Google Pay does not ask for ID proof
Other apps running on UPI such as Google Pay or PhonePe do not ask for ID proof from the user. However, payment apps like Paytm and MobiKwik do KYC for the customers first. Payment facility is given only after KYC verification. With this preparation of WhatsApp, it seems that it is going to add features like Wallet to its app so that business payments etc. can also be taken or given. WhatsApp has not yet given any official statement regarding this.
