Buildings were lit up with diyas and colorful lights on Diwali on Thursday amid restrictions related to COVID-19 in India and a ban on firecrackers in some states. On this occasion people dressed in new and traditional clothes presented sweets to each other and gave good wishes. People who reached the temples followed social distance and many people took the help of digital medium to send greetings. At the same time, the number of patients undergoing treatment for COVID in the country today was the lowest recorded in the last 253 days.
Diwali, one of the most popular festivals of Hindus, is related to the day when Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya with his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana after killing Ravana, the king of Lanka. This festival is also celebrated as the victory of good over evil. President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted the people on the occasion of Diwali and wished them happiness and prosperity. Leaders of many political parties also extended Diwali greetings.

PM Modi meets soldiers in Nowshera sector on Diwali
Prime Minister Modi met soldiers in Nowshera sector of Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir on Diwali. Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu lit a lamp in honor of Indian soldiers. At the same time, the smoke of firecrackers covered the sky of the national capital. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal along with his wife and cabinet ministers perform Diwali Puja at Thyagaraj Stadium. On this occasion a stage with a replica of the Ram temple under construction in Ayodhya was built in the stadium.

In Punjab and Haryana, devotees were seen queuing in temples and gurudwaras. Bandi Chhor Diwas is celebrated in Punjab on the day of Diwali. On this day in 1620, the sixth guru, Guru Hargobind, along with 52 kings, was released from the prison of the Mughals. After his release, Guru Hargobind had reached the Golden Temple in Amritsar and the city was decorated with lights on the occasion. In Punjab, only green crackers were allowed to be burnt between 8 pm and 10 pm tonight. There was a complete ban on the sale and use of firecrackers in Chandigarh.

In West Bengal, Kali Puja was celebrated since morning and people visited temples. In Odisha, the Puri district administration had imposed prohibitory orders around the Jagannath temple to prevent overcrowding. The festival of Diwali was celebrated in Goa by burning the effigy of Narakasur. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Chouhan decided to celebrate Diwali with those who lost their parents due to COVID. Uttarakhand Governor Lt Gen (Retd) Gurmeet Singh and Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami celebrated Diwali with soldiers in the border village of Mana.
