Monday was a relief amidst the third wave of corona virus infection in the country. In many states, there was a decrease in the rapidly increasing new cases today. 28,286 new cases of infection were reported in Maharashtra on Monday, which is 12,519 less than Sunday. The total number of people infected so far in the state has gone up to 75.35 lakh. At the same time, after the death of 36 more people due to infection, the death toll has gone up to 1,42,151. The number of active cases in the state is still 2,99,604. During the last 24 hours, 86 new cases of Omicron variant were also registered.
However, the reduction in cases of infection is also a reason for less testing in the weekend. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 14.74 lakh samples were tested across the country on Sunday. Whereas earlier on January 22, 18.75 lakh samples were tested across the country and on January 21, 19.60 lakh samples were tested. According to the Union Health Ministry, the daily positivity rate in the country is 20.75 percent, while the weekly infection rate has been 17.03 percent.
In the southern states- Karnataka and Kerala, cases of infection were increasing rapidly. Both these states also registered a decline on Monday.
