Corona vaccine has been approved for children in India. The Drug Controller General of India (DGCI) has given in-principle approval to the vaccine, Covaxin, developed by Bharat Biotech for children. Soon after this, now this vaccine will be given to children. This vaccine will be given to children in the age group of 2 to 18 years. Even in this age group, first those children will get this vaccine who are comorbid (who already have a disease) children. After the vaccine was approved, a group of experts recommended that Bharat Biotech’s indigenous vaccine Covaxin be given emergency use to children aged 2 to 18 years.
The recommendation is a step towards launching a COVID-19 vaccine for children ahead of the festive season and amid concerns over a possible third wave of infections. However, the final approval in this matter is yet to be given by the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI). According to people with knowledge of the matter, this work is expected to be completed soon. Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Bharti Praveen Pawar said on Tuesday that the evaluation of the COVID-19 vaccine for children is in progress. He said, “The process is on and we do not interfere in this matter. Will proceed after discussion with experts. So far only four vaccines are available for children.
Bharat Biotech said that it is waiting for approval from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation, after the subject expert committee approved the Covaxin vaccine to children in the age group of 2 to 18 years with certain conditions. The Expert Committee of the Central Drugs Authority of India has given emergency approval to Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin vaccine for children aged two to 18 years, subject to certain conditions. After which Covaxin will be available in the market for children. Bharat Biotech said that the company has submitted data from clinical trials for the age group of two to 18 years to CDSCO. These data were thoroughly reviewed by CDSCO and SEC and gave their positive suggestions.
Kovovax of Serum Institute of India (SII)
It has been approved for testing in children aged 2-18 years. This is the Indian version of the Novovax vaccine for children brought to India by SII. The company’s chief Adar Poonawalla said last month that he expects Kovovax to be approved for those below the age of 18 in January or February next year.
Zydus Cadila की ZvCoV-D
Based on trials, it may get approved for use in age groups 12 and above. However, it has not been included in the vaccination campaign. Indigenously developed and Needle Free ZyCoV-D has received EUA from Drug Controller. Due to which it has become the first vaccine for the age group of 12-18 years in the country.
Biological E की Corbevax
This vaccine has been approved for testing in children aged 5-18 years. The vaccine has been developed from preclinical stage to phase 3 studies in collaboration with the Department of Biotechnology and its PSU Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC).
