The number of Prisoners in the three jails of Delhi (Rohini, Mandoli and Tihar) has reached 20,663, while the capacity is to keep only 10 thousand 26 prisoners. In such a situation, it is difficult to think of a system like social distancing inside Delhi Jails.
The second wave of Coronavirus has created a ruckus in the country’s capital Delhi and now even the jails of Delhi are no longer untouched by this. In prisons too, cases of corona infection are increasing rapidly. Recent Delhi Jails (Delhi Jails) Has found at least 227 prisoners and 60 staff members infected with corona. Even prisoners like Chhota Rajan, Shahabuddin and Omar Khalid have been found to be Corona positive, which is kept under greater protection than other prisoners.
Sources also say that if the investigation is done in more congested jails, then this number of infected prisoners can be increased even more. Actually, the number of prisoners in jails is increasing exponentially, due to which the condition inside the jails is getting worse. For the first time, the number of prisoners in the three jails of Delhi (Rohini, Mandoli and Tihar) has reached 20,663, while the capacity is to keep only 10 thousand 26 prisoners. In many jails, the number of prisoners has exceeded four times the capacity.
Corona cases in jails increased rapidly since April
This year, between mid-March and mid-April, reports of about 70 prisoners and 11 staff members came out Corona positive. Senior jail officials said that 190 prisoners have been infected in Tihar jail so far and the number of prison staff had reached 304. Matters increased rapidly from mid-April. The jail administration says that every effort is being made to deal with the corona and it will be overcome soon. But given the way the number of prisoners is increasing, it is difficult to think of a system like social distancing inside the jails.
Bail and parole to control the crowd
However, to control the rush of prisoners in jails during the epidemic, large numbers of inmates were granted bail and parole last year (Bail and Parole) Was granted and many of them have not returned yet. At least 3,468 inmates in the three jails of Delhi, who were released during the epidemic, are yet to return. When the jail authorities went to find out about these prisoners at their home, they were told that the prisoners are not present at their house. The jail authorities have shared their details with the police so that all those prisoners can be tracked and brought back.
Jail administration took these precautionary steps
Last year, 1,184 criminals were released on emergency parole, of which 112 are yet to return. Director General of Tihar Jail, Sandeep Goyal has ordered that all precautionary measures should be taken and that prisoners above 60 years of life in prisons should be subjected to corona test every day. Simultaneously, the meetings in the jail have also been stopped. The jail administration had recently banned prisoners’ meetings with family members.
