In Rajasthan today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi attacked the Congress, questioning its ability to maintain power and what he called its “guarantee formula” for state elections.
As part of the BJP’s Jan Sampark Abhiyan, PM Modi travelled to Ajmer and Pushkar and attacked the Congress for corruption.
When speaking about the Congress’s five pledges for Karnataka, where it recently won an election, Prime Minister Modi said: “The Congress has a new formula of guarantees. But are they fulfilling their guarantees? Their guarantees will leave the country bankrupt.”
Ashok Gehlot, the chief minister of Rajasthan, is directing the Congress’ election campaign there, which emphasises social welfare programmes like free electricity and less expensive cooking gas.
“Fifty years ago, the Congress guaranteed that it would remove poverty. But it turned out to be their biggest betrayal of the poor,” PM Modi said.
“It has been a policy of the Congress to mislead the poor and keep them deprived. The people of Rajasthan have also suffered a lot due to this…And what has Rajasthan got? A government where MLAs, CM (Chief Minister) and ministers fight among themselves,” he said.
The statements were in reference to the conflict between Ashok Gehlot and Sachin Pilot in the Congress, which has not been settled despite numerous attempts and a display of togetherness on Monday.
Shortly after the PM’s statements, Sachin Pilot repeated his demand that the Gehlot administration take immediate action in response to corruption charges against the previous BJP-led administration of Vasundhara Raje.
“On the matter of corruption and justice, there is no compromise,” Mr Pilot said.
This was PM Modi’s fourth trip to Rajasthan this year; there will be elections there in five months. The BJP has been in power at the federal level for nine years as of the rally.
According to PM Modi, his cabinet has devoted the last nine years to serving the public, promoting good governance, and ensuring the welfare of the underprivileged. He read without pausing from a list of his party’s plans.
Before 2014, he claimed, there were protests against corruption and terrorist attacks in significant cities, and the Congress controlled the government from a distance.
“The Congress developed a corrupt system that sucked the blood of the country and hindered development,” he said, referencing an old comment by former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi that out of 100 paise, only 15 paise reached the poor.
The world is now discussing India, the prime minister remarked, and experts claim that India is extremely near to putting an end to extreme poverty.
PM Modi visited Pushkar prior to the gathering and offered prayers at the nation’s sole temple dedicated to Lord Brahma.
