Central Government is expanding the scope of Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, healthcare budget will also be increased: Dr. VK Paul

NITI Aayog Member (Health) Dr. VK Paul said that the central government is expanding the scope of Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY). (PM-JAY) has started adopting other government schemes. On the initiative of the state governments, many possibilities are being considered for the development of this scheme. Dr. Paul also called upon the industry to strengthen the health sector infrastructure. He said that the central government will increase its budget on health care. Dr. Paul said this while addressing the inaugural session of FICCI HEAL 2021, a program organized by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and NITI Aayog.

Dr. Paul said that the government will continue to improve the PM-Jai scheme. The institutions which have not become a part of it so far should also partner with it. He said that we should work to include the rest of the hospitals in PM-Jai. The country needs to expand in the field of critical medicine and emergency medicine and this has to be taken forward. For this, there is a need to create a National Network of Excellent Emergency and Trauma System for this. For which the help of the industry is needed.

Healthcare budget to be doubled

Dr. Paul said that the state governments are planning to increase their healthcare budget and plan to increase it to around 8 per cent from the current 4.5 per cent. This will improve the condition of healthcare. He has appealed to the private sector to give suggestions for the next year’s budget and also to tell how to strengthen and utilize the AYUSH or traditional medicine sector of the country.

District hospitals should be converted into medical colleges
While giving his views on the health infrastructure, Dr. Paul said that we should focus on the opportunity to convert more district hospitals into medical colleges, so that it helps in increasing the human resources. He also appealed to the private sector to increase the focus on DNB education. So that there are better specialist doctors in the country.
