
Ram Shankar Katheria, a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, was sentenced to two years in prison on Saturday in connection with an assault case from 2011. Former Union Minister Katheria is charged with assaulting a worker of the power supply business back in 2011. Katheria is probably going to be excluded from the Lok Sabha as a result of the court judgement from today. He is the current representative for Etawah in Uttar Pradesh in the Lok Sabha.

According to the Representation of People Act of 1951, an elected official who receives a sentence for any offence of two years or more is immediately disqualified. “…I appeared before the court normally. Court has given a decision against me today. I respect the court, I have the right to appeal and I will exercise it”, Katheria told news agency ANI. Ram Shankar Katheria is an Etawah-based Bharatiya Janata Party member of parliament. From November 2014 to July 2016, he was the Union Minister of State for the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

Additionally, Katheria presided over the National Commission for Scheduled Castes. He is a member of the Ministry of Home Affairs’ Consultative Committee and the Standing Committee on Defence of the Parliament. Katheria was detained in 2019 in connection with an assault on an Agra toll booth employee. The lawmaker’s bodyguards are accused of assaulting toll booth workers and firing shots in the air. The assault was documented by the CCTV cameras at the toll booth. The BJP leader, however, claimed that his security guards had been ambushed by toll plaza workers, causing them to defend themselves by opening fire.
