Australia’s Deputy Chief of Space Agency Anthony Murphett said on Monday that Australia will cooperate with India’s Gaganyaan mission to conduct surveillance from the Cocos Keeling Islands. Speaking at the International Space Conference organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Murphett said space cooperation between the two countries is growing and the space agencies of India and Australia have recently updated their MoUs. He said that we will cooperate in the Gaganyaan mission by monitoring through Cocos Keeling Island, the territory of Australia.
Earlier this year, Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) chief K Sivan had said that ISRO is also in talks with Australia’s space agency to build a ground station in the Cocos Keeling Islands for the Gaganyaan mission. Satellites in orbit cannot transmit their information to a station on Earth if they do not have a clear view of the ground station. The data relay serves to transmit satellite information. Sometimes signals do not reach due to blind spots. A data relay satellite monitoring from Cocos Keeling Island will help address these issues, Gaganyaan is India’s ambitious space mission, which aims to take three Indians into Low Earth Orbit (LEO).
India plans to send astronauts to space by 2022
Under the Gaganyaan mission, there is a plan to send India’s astronauts to space by 2022. Four pilots of the Indian Air Force were selected for the mission. He had been training since February last year at the Yuri Gagarin Research and Test Cosmonaut Training Center near Moscow. The goal of the Gaganyaan mission is to send a 4-member crew to space for 5 to 7 days in 2022 on the occasion of 75 years of India’s independence.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced this mission in his address to the nation on Independence Day in 2018. ISRO started working on the plan accordingly. This mission has already been delayed due to the Corona epidemic. Actually ISRO had planned the first unmanned flight in December 2020, the second in July 2021 and the first manned spaceflight mission in December 2021.
