Following rumors of Koran sacrilege on social media, mobs of fundamentalists continue to attack minority Hindus in Bangladesh, targeting Hindu shrines, idols of gods and goddesses and setting their homes on fire. This fire of attacks, which started from Comilla district, has now spread to Noakhali and the capital Dhaka. The same Noakhali where Mahatma Gandhi had to go on 7 November 1946 to extinguish the fire of communalism. The same Dhaka which was named after the largest Dhakeshwari temple in Bangladesh.
If we look back on the pages of history, the history of attack on minority Hindus in Bangladesh is not new. Before the demolition of the Babri Masjid in India, on 29 October 1990, the political organization Jamaat-e-Islami in Bangladesh spread the rumor of the demolition of the Babri Masjid. Due to this, many Hindus were killed in the violence that broke out on 30 October. After the victory of the BNP-Jamaat alliance in 2001, there was violence against Hindus. According to the 2004 International Religious Freedom Report, 11 members of the same Hindu family were burnt alive in Chittagong after the 2001 elections. But now that Sheikh Hasina is in power in Bangladesh, a secular power, then why are incidents of attacks on Hindus happening continuously?
Fanatics don’t like Hasina’s love for India
It is coming to the fore in media reports that in the latest incidents of attack, the protesters are raising anti-India slogans, as well as giving a message to Sheikh Hasina that she should end her closeness with New Delhi. Actually, there are many Islamic fundamentalist factions in Bangladesh who are angry with Sheikh Hasina’s government. It was only last year when Junaid Babunagari, the chief of Bangladesh’s radical Islamic organization Hazrat-e-Islam, had said that we will demolish all the idols of the country and it does not matter which idol belongs to whom. Even the installation of a statue of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib-ur-Rahman on his 100th birth anniversary was opposed by Junaid. So the first thing is that Sheikh Hasina’s friendly relationship with India is not acceptable to these radical organizations. Such organizations want to see Bangladesh as a fully Islamic state, which is not possible under Sheikh Hasina’s power. Because Sheikh Hasina never fails to mention India’s invaluable contribution to the independence of Bangladesh. Even after the latest incidents of attack, Sheikh Hasina said that Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib-ur-Rahman only wanted people of all religions to practice their religion freely in Bangladesh. We will follow the same path for which Bangabandhu had created an independent country. This love of India of Sheikh Hasina is not liked by the fanatics and as soon as they get the opportunity, they keep on looking for an opportunity to spoil the relations between India and Bangladesh by attacking Hindus and their temples.
The sacrilege of the Holy Quran is just an excuse
It is also a fact of minority Hindus in Bangladesh, situated at the mouth of the Ganges-Brahmaputra, that a large number of Hindus have migrated from here in recent years. In such a situation, if someone started attacking Hindus by spreading the rumor that if he had insulted the Quran or Prophet Mohammad, then this thing does not come down from the throat. In fact, the fundamentalist forces know very well that in the last 5000 years, Hindus have not attacked anyone, nor did they convert anyone by taking a sword. Attacks on Hindus everywhere are the result of this thinking. This is completely a part of a conspiracy to expel Hindus from Bangladesh. Dr. Tathagata Roy, India’s right-wing leader, former governor and a thinker who has studied deeply on Bangladesh, has also been constantly saying that there are two types of people in Bangladesh who attack Hindus. One fundamentalist who believes that Bangladesh is only a country of Muslims and another group who wants to grab the immovable property of Hindus in Bangladesh. That is to say that the sacrilege of the Quran is an excuse, the real purpose is to capture the property of the Hindus. This is the social reality inside Bangladesh.
China’s growing dominance in South Asia
If we look at the attack on Hindus in Bangladesh in a broader perspective, then one cannot ignore the growing influence of China in the countries of South Asia. It is well known that China considers India as enemy number one. China is constantly trying to isolate India from all its neighboring countries. Even China was successful to a great extent in trapping Nepal and Sri Lanka in its trap and pitting it against India. Now China is also trying to put Bangladesh in the same line. When China did not understand Sheikh Hasina’s trick, it started cultivating the radical organizations there. China’s vision is clearly working on the same formula that when Hindus are attacked in Bangladesh, there will be attacks on temples, then its reaction will be in India. If India-Bangladesh relations will sour, then it will be compulsion for Bangladesh to make friendship with China. In this way, when China tightens its grip on all the neighboring countries of India, then it will be very easy for it to bow down to India.
However, it is necessary to extinguish the fire of attack on Hindus in Bangladesh in time. Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has also said that no one will be spared in this matter. It doesn’t matter what religion they belong to. Along with this, India has also been requested that peace should be maintained there on this issue. Hindus of Bangladesh are affected if something happens in India. Therefore, now it is necessary for India and Bangladesh to find a permanent solution together in time, otherwise terrorist organizations and imperialist forces like China will not miss to take advantage of it.
