Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma advocated Uniform Civil Code in the country, said- this will ensure respect for Muslim women

Himanta Biswa Sarma said that no Muslim woman wants her husband to have three wives. Nobody wants this.

In Delhi, Sarma on Sunday met Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, who had recently said that his government would prepare a draft to implement the UCC in the state. The Chief Minister of Assam said that every Muslim whom he met, all of them wanted UCC. Sarma told reporters on Saturday that no Muslim woman wants her husband to have three wives. Nobody wants this. No one will tell you that her husband should marry three women. Who wants this?

He said that if a Muslim man marries more than one woman, then it is not his, but the problem of Muslim mothers and sisters. Sarma said that if Muslim women and mothers are to be respected in the society, then UCC should be implemented after the triple talaq law. He said that I am Hindu and I have UCC. I have UCC for my sister and daughter. If I can have UCC for my daughter then Muslim daughters should also get this protection.

Need to focus on unemployment and economy – Owaisi

On the other hand, All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen chief Asaduddin Owaisi has said that BJP leaders are talking of bringing a Uniform Civil Code in the country, which is not needed right now. Instead, Owaisi said that special attention should be paid to the development of the economy and employment generation. Owaisi, Lok Sabha MP from Hyderabad, was talking to reporters after an Iftar party organized by AIMIM MP from Aurangabad, Imtiaz Jalil, on Saturday. He said that Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP leaders are saying that they will bring a Uniform Civil Code, but this is not the need of the country today. The economy has gone down, unemployment is rising which needs attention.

Last month, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had said that a Uniform Civil Code would soon be implemented in the state. He said that we had promised to implement Uniform Civil Code if re-elected. In the first meeting of our cabinet, we approved the proposal to set up a committee of experts to draft a Uniform Civil Code. It will be implemented in the state soon. I request other states also to implement this.
