The Punjab government has declared one day state mourning on the death of Milkha Singh. Also, his last rites will be performed with state honors.

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh while paying tributes on the death of legendary sprinter Milkha Singh said that a separate chair will be made in the name of Milkha Singh at Patiala Sports University. The Chief Minister said that a separate academy has been asked by the Akali Dal to be set up in the name of Milkha Singh, that too would be established in the Sports University of Patiala. He said that provision would be made to train better athletes there at the expense of the government.
Milkha Singh, 91, died at Chandigarh’s PGIMER Hospital on Friday night after battling for a month with Corona virus infection. His last rites will be performed with state honors at 5 pm on Saturday. The Punjab government has declared one day state mourning on the death of Milkha Singh.
Chief Minister Amarinder Singh tweeted, “I have directed that the last rites of late Milkha Singh ji will be performed with full state honours. Along with this, there will be a day’s state mourning in Punjab as a mark of respect to this great player. A week before this, Nirmal Kaur, wife of Milkha Singh and former captain of the Indian volleyball team, also died of COVID-19.

Earlier, Amarinder Singh had tweeted late night, “Saddened and shocked by the passing away of Milkha Singh ji. This marked the end of an era for India and Punjab. My condolences to his family and fans. He will be an inspiration to the generations to come.”
Was found infected with COVID on 19 May
Milkha Singh is survived by his son golfer Jeev Milkha Singh and three daughters. He was found infected with the corona virus on 19 May. He was later discharged from the hospital at the request of the family, but had to be admitted to PGIMER again on June 3 due to low oxygen levels.
VP Singh Badnore, Governor of Punjab and Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh, said, “Saddened by the passing away of the Flying Sikh Padmashree Milkha Singh ji. India lost another precious life due to Corona. His contribution to sports will always be remembered.”
