The mats are named Moorhen Yoga Mats, after the name Kama Sorai (Purple Color Moorhen), a bird found in the Deepor Beel Wildlife Sanctuary. The most important thing is that no metal is being used in it.
This yoga mat will not only solve the problem of hyacinth but will also become a source of income.
6 girls from Assam have made a biodegradable yoga mat. It is believed that it can solve a big problem. With this, it will also become a source of livelihood. In the last few years, the fishermen community of Assam has been disturbed by hyacinth. Water hyacinth has created a big challenge for this community, which lives by killing fish from the lakes. All the 6 girls who make these Badodegradable Yoga Mats belong to the fishermen society.
There is a freshwater lake in the south-west of Guwahati city, named Deepor Beal. It has the status of Ramsar site (Wetland of international importance) and a bird wildlife sanctuary. The lake has been a source of livelihood for 9 villages of the fishing community. But for the last few years, this community was troubled by the excessive amount of hyacinth in the lake.
This innovation of girls can contribute significantly to the environmental protection and stability of Deepor Beal. Livelihood can also be ensured for the families dependent on this lake. This biodegradable mat is named Moorhen Yoga Mat, which will be introduced in the world market soon.
At the initiative of the North East Center for Technology Applications and Reach (NECTAR), a group of women was added to overcome this problem. Their effort was to earn money from hyacinth and to overcome this challenge. NECTAR is an autonomous body in the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.

The institute studied the properties of hyacinth and the possibilities used. After this, it was decided to make hand-made biodegradable mats for doing yoga. This mat made from fiber processing will not only overcome the problem of hyacinth in the lakes, but it will also become a means of livelihood.
The most important process is to store, dry and prepare hyacinth before use for weaving. The help of technology is also being taken in this work, which has made the work of drying easier. Solar dryer has reduced the time taken for drying hyacinth by three days. The construction of this mat will also help fishermen to compensate for the loss during heavy rains.
Women are also taking help of technology to develop high quality, comfortable and well biodegradable and compostable yoga mats. So far, 38 women from three villages have been involved in this work. Experts are confident that in the coming days, production will be increased with the help of technology.
The mats are named Moorhen Yoga Mats, after the name Kama Sorai (Purple Color Moorhen), a bird found in the Deepor Beel Wildlife Sanctuary. The most important thing is that no metal is being used in it.
