The US recently handed over 157 antiquities and artifacts related to Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his US visit. Out of 157 antiquities, the first consignment of 63 antiquities has reached India.

In the last 20 years, 107 antique items have been brought back from different countries. This information was given by the Union Culture Ministry in the Lok Sabha on Monday. According to the ministry, between 2015 and 2021, about 14 artefacts and antiquities have been stolen from different states.
According to data shared by Union Minister of Tourism, Culture and Development of North Eastern Region G Kishan Reddy in response to a question, 107 antiques have been brought back to India from other countries from 2001-2021. The data shows that in 2021, most antiques have been brought back from America. This year 63 items have been received by India from America.

He told that during the last 20 years, 107 antiquities from different countries have been brought back to India. Whereas, between 2015 and 2021, about 14 artifacts and antiquities were stolen from different states. Reddy told the Lok Sabha that apart from America, there are other countries from where antiquities and artefacts have been brought back. They include- Holland, France, Australia, Germany, UK, Canada and Singapore.

Reddy said, ‘The United States of America (USA) recently handed over 157 antiquities and artifacts related to Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his US visit. Out of 157 antiquities, the first consignment of 63 antiquities has reached India. While 9 antiquities have been obtained from Australia.

Significantly, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi returned home from the US tour on 26 September, he had brought 157 ancient artifacts and objects with him. America had presented these artifacts and objects to the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said in a statement that most of these artifacts and objects date back to the 11th to 14th centuries. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also thanked America for returning these artifacts.
