Till now there are more than 35 thousand species of fish in the world. Out of these, 200 to 300 new species are added every year.
Fish is the queen of water, life is its water… Everyone must have heard this poem, but have you ever wondered why fishes don’t drown in water even without swimming. They can remain stable in one place in the water for hours. We are not talking about cartilaginous fish (sharks, skates, rays or whales) here. We are talking about those fishes known as bony fishes. They are small in size, there are many species of fish in them which are very much liked as seafood. So let’s know why the fishes do not drown. (Photo- Getty Images)

First of all, let us tell you that till now there are more than 35 thousand species of fish in the world. Out of these, 200 to 300 new species are added every year. These fishes are of three types, first jawless i.e. jawless, in which species like hag fish and lampreys come, second are cartilaginous i.e. sharks, whales etc. big fishes and third are bony fishes whose main species are tuna, eel and trout. Now we know why fishes don’t drown, actually bony fishes have an extra organ called swim bladder, according to Science ABC, bony fish can stay in water for many hours with the help of swim bladder. In this the fish fills air, so that it does not drown even without swimming and can go deeper. This bladder is exactly like the lungs of the human body. (Photo- Getty Images)

Apart from bony fish, cartilaginous species do not have a swim bladder, they swim with their fatty liver. Fishes of this species, such as the liver of sharks and whales, observe up to 75% of the weight of these fishes and only 25% of their weight remains in water. It helps fishes to swim. All fishes need oxygen to survive, for this fishes have special organs called gills, they are on both sides of their head. Fishes open their mouth to breathe inside the water and pump it towards the gills, after that they absorb the oxygen present in the gills and the water comes out by opening the gills.
