If we look at RIP as a word, then it will mean something else. ‘Rip’ means to cut. Although seen in the form of short form, the full form of RIP is – ‘Rest In Peace’. It is derived from the Latin phrase ‘Requiescat in Pace’, which means ‘to sleep in peace’.
It is said about Requiescat In Pace that if a person dies in the peace of the church, then his soul is united with Jesus Christ. Christians believe that after death the ‘soul’ separates from the body and the two will reunite on ‘Judgment Day’. There is a reference to ‘Rest in Peace’ in Hindi- ‘May the soul rest in peace’. That’s why when we write RIP, it means, the soul of the person who has passed away, rest in peace.
Its beginning is considered to be from the 18th century. However, according to some reports, after death in the 5th century, the words ‘Requiescat in Pace’ have been found on the tombs. The circulation of this word increased from Christianity itself and this word became global. Many people write ‘May his soul rest in peace’ or ‘May his soul rest in peace’ in Hindi, whereas in English people write only RIP.
