There has been a difference between the ideologies of Mahatma Gandhi and Bhimrao Ambedkar. Due to this difference in the ideologies of both, the foundation of the Poona Pact Agreement was laid. The reason behind this has been Ambedkar’s struggle to provide privileges to the Dalits. The result of his efforts was when the provision of reservation for Dalit society was made in 1909 and in 1932 the British Government started the Communal Award.
With this, Dalits got the right to two votes. That is, through one vote, he got the right to choose his representative and through the second vote, the representative of the general class. It was described as a big victory for the rights of Dalits, but there was a contradiction between Mahatma Gandhi and Ambedkar on this point.
Hindu society in danger of disintegration
Mahatma Gandhi was angry with the Dalits getting this right. They say that Hindu society will be shattered by separate constituencies and giving them the right to two votes. will be divided. To stop this, Bapu wrote many letters to the British government, but no hearing took place. Eventually he decided to go on a fast. He sat on a fast in the Yerwada Jail in Pune and stuck to his point of view.
When resentment among people started rising against Ambedkar
Mahatma Gandhi had clearly expressed his opposition through the fast, but Ambedkar said, this would lead to the upliftment of Dalits. This will prove to be a big decision in the direction of their rights and development.
Mahatma Gandhi protested by writing a letter to the then British PM Ramsay MacDonald on 18 August. He wrote, I am opposing this decision by risking my life. I am against this separation. Told the British government to put a stop to it, but it did not stop. He again wrote a letter on 9 September and made his point, but the British clearly refused to put a stop to it. At the same time, Ambedkar had to say that he would not let a justified demand for Mahatma Gandhi be stopped, he would stick to his stand, but in jail.Gandhiji’s health started deteriorating due to continuous fasting. A message went to the people that the reason for this was Ambedkar. As a result, resentment and anger for Ambedkar started increasing among the people of the country. Ultimately Ambedkar had to take a step back.
When Ambedkar reached jail
According to Britannica, on September 24, 1932, Ambedkar reached the Yerwada Jail in Pune to handle the situation and ended Gandhi’s fast. It was here that an agreement was reached between the two, which was called the Poona Pact. According to this agreement, the Dalits got separate electorate and the right to two votes was abolished. However, this was compensated by increasing the number of seats reserved for Dalits. Other than thisIt was also talked about giving proper representation to the Depressed Classes in public services and local institutions on the basis of their educational qualifications.
