Apart from hotels and restaurants, its prevalence is seen more in banking and insurance. So let us know what is the rule of service charge and what is the government preparing for it.
what is service charge
When we buy a product or service, some fee has to be paid for it. This fee is called service charge. Normally this charge is levied at the time of transaction and not before. If you eat food in a hotel or restaurant, then this charge will be taken from you at the time of bill payment. If you do any transaction in the bank, then the service charge will be taken at the same time. Travel and tourism agencies also majorly charge service charges. The processing cost may be included in the service charge.
Different names of service charge
It is not necessary that everywhere you should be charged money in the name of service charge. It is also sometimes called service fee. Money is charged in the name of booking fees in hotels, security fees in travel and account maintenance fees and customer service fees in banks. Let us understand it in easy language with an example. When you go to buy a car in a showroom, you are charged different fees in the name of service charge. This fee is charged in the name of pre-delivery inspection charge, accessories fitting charge and card swiping charge. All these payments have to be made in the name of service charge.
Bank and restaurant rules
Service charge is levied in banks at flat or fixed rate. While opening the account, the bank charges you a monthly fee which is also called maintenance charge. At the end of every month, the bank will deduct this fee from your account. If you take the service of the bank’s ATM, then its service charge is different. The airline charges checked or oversized baggage fees, cancellation fees, early seat selection fees, WiFi, food, beverages and entertainment fees. Similarly, in restaurants, service charge is levied for serving food or providing other services. The service charge can be up to 10 percent of the entire bill and this money is spent on the staff of the restaurant or hotel.
preparation of government
The government has called a big meeting on June 2 to give relief to the common people from the service charge in the expenses of the restaurant. Organizations related to hotels and restaurants will participate in the meeting. Along with this, representatives of companies like Zomato, Swiggy, Delhivery, Zepto, Ola and Uber will also be involved. The rule of service charge in the restaurant clearly states that the customer will decide whether to pay the service charge or not. Restaurants cannot pressurize customers for this. It is not mandatory for the customer to pay this charge. No customer can be compelled to pay service charge. But this rule is not followed and the pockets of the customers are cut. The government will now strengthen this rule that restaurants or hotels cannot forcibly charge service charges from any customer.
