Bahadur Shah Zafar himself was in Begum Samru’s mansion before going to Rangoon, where he was being monitored by an English officer named Charles Griffin. His grandson Zubayruddin Gorgan also wandered in different parts of India before reaching Darbhanga. First he reached Ratlam, after that he stayed in many areas of Rajasthan and then from there to Allahabad. But, if he did not like Allahabad, then he came to Azimabad (Patna).
Gorgan has told in his book ‘Mauj-e-Sultani’ on his memoirs that the people of Patna city are civilized and courteous. Here he got special love from the jagirdar of Islampur, Chaudhary Mohammad Jahrulhaq. After Patna, Gorgan went to Muzaffarpur, from where his next stop was Bettiah. After this he remained guest of Bettiah Raj for a few days.
