The writing of Indian languages is creating a new identity around the world. In the year 2023, once again the book of the Indian writer International Booker Prize Nominated for. Tamil writers to be nominated this year are – Perumal Murugan, whose book ‘Pyre’ has been included in the list. This is the first Tamil novel to be nominated for the Booker.
Earlier in the year 2022, Hindi writer Gitanjali Shri ‘sand tomb Hindi novelist who won the International Booker Prize for ‘Ret Samadhi’ also received this honor through translation. Now the Tamil writer’s novel has been nominated. The English translation of Perumal Murugan’s novel ‘Pyari’ has been done by Anirudh Vasudevan.
What is the story of ‘Pyari’?
Talking about Murugan’s novel, the judges of the award have said, ‘Perumal Murugan is a writer who gives a realistic portrayal of caste hatred and violence in the society. This is also the specialty of his listed novels. His novel is specific and universal.
In this novel, the village of Tamil Nadu has been depicted in the 1980s. The story is about a couple who belong to different castes. Caste-based violence in the society is investigated through both of them.

Murugan is a famous writer in Tamil language. He is a professor of Tamil literature. He has written 10 novels. which have been translated into English. There are also five collections of short stories and poems. Apart from this, there are 10 prose books related to language and literature.
In the writings of Murugan, there are special glimpses of the Tamil village, society and folk tradition there. Many of his books are known for their strong criticism of the caste system. In many of his books, he gives an antidote to the oppression and violence caused by the caste system in the society.

What are the chances of getting the award?
Altogether 13 novels are longlisted this year. Apart from Murugan’s ‘Pyri’, Bulgarian writer Georgi Gospodinov’s ‘Time Shelter’ and Catalan writer Eva Baltasar’s English translation of the novel ‘Boulder’ are also in the race for the award.
The prize money is divided equally between the author and translator of the winning book. The shortlist of the top six books will be announced on 18 April while the winner will be announced on 23 May.
