Entry into politics after studying law

Ranil Wickremesinghe was born on March 24, 1949 in Colombo, Sri Lanka in a well-to-do family. Father Esmond Wickremesinghe was a lawyer by profession. Ranil also followed in his footsteps and studied at Ceylon University in Sri Lanka. After completing his law studies, he entered politics in the 70s. Started his political career with the United National Party here. Contested the Lok Sabha elections in 1977 and won. He was made the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of External Affairs. Became the youngest minister and took over many ministries

When Ranil took over the ministry for the first time, he was the youngest minister of his time. The graph of his political career progressed rapidly. In 1993, President Ranasinghe Premadasa appointed Ranil Wickremesinghe as the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. On May 7, 1993, Ranil took oath as the Prime Minister for the first time. Ranil has been the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka four times in his political career.

Resigned from the post of PM in 2019 due to party pressure

Ranil last tendered his resignation as Prime Minister in November 2019. It was only after his resignation that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa appointed his brother Mahinda Rajapaksa as the Prime Minister of the country. According to Sri Lanka’s constitution, the prime minister can hold office until the next parliamentary election, but in 2019, Wickremesinghe decided to step down due to pressure from his own party.
