This time there has been less rain in the northern plains of the country. There has been a lack of rain, especially in the areas of the Ganges. Due to this, the inflation of food items in these areas may increase in the coming time. The main reason is that due to less rainfall, the production of paddy has decreased. The worst effect of this can be seen on the prices of rice and the rates of rice may increase. The main reason behind this is being told to monsoon.
The major agricultural states of the country Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh have recorded less rain. There was little rain in the last days of the monsoon, but in the initial days it saw a severe reduction. Because of this, people planted paddy very little. Even if transplanted, the yield was killed due to lack of irrigation. In this way, in Bihar, Jharkhand and UP, where paddy is cultivated the most, this time the cultivation of paddy was very less. Therefore, the price of rice is expected to increase in the coming days. The effect of inflation is already visible.
A study by India Ratings shows that kharif paddy cultivation in the plains states has decreased compared to last year. This figure is as of 23 September. Last year, paddy cultivation in these states was up to 26 percent, but this time it has come down to 24.1%. This has increased the possibility of reducing the yield of paddy. The monsoon for the year 2022 has been above normal, but the entire regions have not received uniform rainfall. Till September 30, the rainfall was good at 92.5 cm, which is 6 per cent more than the long period average (LPA) of 86.86 cm.
On the other hand, 12 states of the country have received above normal and average rainfall. On the other hand, normal rainfall has been recorded in 18 states. However, six states/UTs recorded deficient rainfall and this includes major kharif crop producing states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand. Due to less rainfall, 1.2 percent less paddy has been planted. This figure is as of 23 September. There has been a decline in sowing of paddy (5.5 percent), pulses (3.9 percent) and oilseeds (0.8 percent).
The wholesale rates of rice and rice-related products have already increased. By the month of August, it has gained 6.6 percent, which is the rise of the last 63 months. In comparison, the wholesale inflation of oil and pulses is low. It is seeing the growth of the last six months, which has reached 2.6. However, the returning monsoon has brought good rains in September-October. There is also a possibility ahead due to which the Rabi crop is expected to be good.
