There have been many such companies in the world which started with some other product, but got recognized by some other product. The same happened with Colgate. About 150 years old Colgate was started by American businessman William Colgate. He started it in 1875. Started selling soap and candles, but he was not able to earn desired profit. As a solution, he decided to sell toothpaste.
It is a matter of those times when machines were not easily available to prepare the packing of toothpaste. After launching the powder, when William launched the toothpaste, he started selling it in cartons. It was used in the same way as a person uses his fingers to extract ghee.
When toothpaste was introduced in a tube
For a long time, the problem of packaging toothpaste remained intact, but in 1896 it was changed. Toothpaste was launched for the first time by keeping it in a tube. Through this it became easy to use toothpaste. Due to this idea of his, the popularity of Colgate increased. Seeing rapid fame, in 1928 a company named Palmolive bought Colgate. In 1953, its name was changed to Colgate Palmolive.
When Colgate got hit hard
Colgate became a well-known brand among the American people, but it was given a tough competition by P&G company’s toothpaste. This company came up with fluoride toothpaste. The company promoted it vigorously. Popularity increased among the people regarding this.By 1955, this company overtook Colgate. Colgate took a long time to change its strategy. After seeing this phase, Colgate had understood one thing that if it wants to remain in the market, it has to make a habit of doing something new. In this way the company changed the strategy. the companyFluoride toothpaste was launched in 1964. It returned the old status of Colgate. After this the company did experiments one after the other which people liked.
Launched Colgate Total
The company continued its new strategy even further. In 1992, a new product named Colgate Total was launched in the market. The company promoted this product by stating three features. It was told in the merits that it gives relief from the space made between the teeth i.e. cavity, dental dirt and gum problems. This product with three features was highly appreciated. After this, the company launched 14 other types of products in many countries of the world including India. From Priyanka Chopra to Kareena Kapoor were made brand ambassadors. After this the company never looked back.
