Started with Rs 50 lakh
In the 60s, Leslai Sahni, brother-in-law of JRD Tata, the then chairman of the TATA Group, suggested creating a separate company to provide IT facilities in the country. This is a matter of those times when there was no company in the country to meet the needs related to data. Keeping this in mind, preparations started to form the company.
In 1962, the first team was formed for this. The work of its maintenance was given to Yash Sahni. Formed with an initial investment of 50 lakhs, this company was known as the Data Processing Unit of Tata Sons. Some people were hired from MIT to improve the work.
The company’s first client was steel company TISCO, which later became part of Tata. TCS made punch cards for this. In 1966 it was named Tata Services and it officially started in 1968. Gradually, the company started expanding business in other areas.
Highest revenue from America
Ramadorai, who was the CEO of TS, has mentioned many things related to the company in his book ‘The TCS Story’. He writes, ‘In the 60s there was no market for IT in India. TCS focused abroad, especially America, from the initial period, which is why even today the highest revenue of TCS comes from America. In the initial phase, the company was also working on a large scale as management consulting. It also had to provide control system along with production planning for Hindustan Aeronautics Limited.
Company expansion in 15 sectors
He writes, today TCS is working in 15 types of industrial sectors. These include communication media and action service education, banking, healthcare, insurance, capital market, consumer goods and distribution, energy resources, manufacturing, retail, education, high tech, life science, public service, travel and logistics. Apart from this, there are many other verticals of TCS as well.
