SP Founder and Uttar Pradesh Former Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav Not anymore. He died on Monday at the age of 82. He was admitted to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram on October 2 after suffering from breathing problems, where his health continued to be critical. Netaji has been one of those politicians who have always surprised. In the arena of politics too, he lit up many politicians. One such anecdote is related to Mulayam Singh and Sonia Gandhi. When Netaji blew his senses.
The thing is from 1999. It was the government of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee of BJP. The government had failed in the confidence motion. The then Congress President Sonia Gandhi tried to take advantage of this. When Sonia Gandhi staked claim to form the government in front of the then President KR Narayanan, Netaji opposed the proposal to make Sonia Gandhi the Prime Minister. He had given a new color to politics by raising the issue of his being from Italy origin.
Sonia Gandhi’s claim and Netaji’s denial
Sonia Gandhi had made all preparations to topple the Atal government. He called BSP supremo Mayawati and talked. On April 17, 1999, Atalji lost the trust vote by just one vote, after which on April 21, Sonia Gandhi came forward to form the Congress government. He presented the claim of getting the support of 272 MPs before President KR Narayanan.
The biggest screw was the PM candidate. The CPM party was preparing to make its leader Jyoti Basu the Prime Minister and Mulayam Singh also came with the Congress to make him the PM. But Sonia Gandhi did not want any party other than the Congress to get a chance to lead. When things did not work out between the two, Mulayam Singh folded his hands in front of Sonia Gandhi and refused to support the Congress directly.
Netaji’s condition
Senior BJP leader LK Advani has recorded an anecdote of not supporting the Congress in his book My Country, My Life. He writes, in the midst of that political upheaval, SP supremo Mulayam Singh reached Jaya Jaitley’s house. I was there too. During the meeting, he had clearly said in front of George Fernandez that he would not support Sonia Gandhi to form the government at any cost, if one of my conditions is accepted.
When he was asked the condition, he said that he will withdraw support to Sonia Gandhi, but promise that you people will not stake claim to form the government again and will allow re-elections. Everyone agreed to this. In this way, Netaji, along with Advani, fixed Sonia’s plan in the political arena and decided to leave the Congress and support the BJP.
