Why is the board’s rule not followed on OTT?
The censoring of short or feature films shown on an OTT is not the same as that prescribed by the Central Board of Film Certification for showing in cinema halls. Producer-directors on OTT have to take a self-cognizance decision about the content that it should not be obscene, anti-national or hurt the sentiments of any community/gender.
SC has also rejected the censor petition
The Supreme Court had given relief to the OTT producers-directors and artists while giving its verdict on a petition filed in this regard. The petition asked for pre-screening of web series, OTT films and other digital content, but the court said that these contents are also broadcast from other countries, so it does not come under Indian censorship.
Now what did the Center say about the censor on OTT?
There has been a debate about the censorship of OTT for a long time. Especially the content here has been under question regarding indecent language and obscene scenes. Therefore, now Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur has assured that the government is planning to take strict action to stop obscenity and indecent scenes and language on the over-the-top (OTT) platform.
Anurag Thakur has said in clear words that abuse in the name of creativity will not be tolerated. The government is serious about the complaints of increasing abusive and obscene content on OTT platforms. If there is a need to make any changes in the rules in this regard, then the government will consider in that direction.
OTT audience is increasing in India
At present, the number of OTT viewers in India is around 43 million. This figure is expected to increase to 50 million by the end of 2023. OTT platforms mostly gained popularity during the time of COVID 19, when cinema halls were closed. But due to many features, this popularity remains intact and has become an alternative to the big screen.
