Sir Jadunath Sarkar has said that Murshid Quli Khan was originally a Hindu and his name was Surya Narayan Mishra, who was born in Deccan in 1670. Took to Persia as parents and gave him education.
Hadi returned to India after the death of his master. Served in Mughal rule as Diwan of Hyderabad and Faujdar of Golconda. When Aurangzeb was looking for an honest and efficient Diwan for Bengal, he chose this young man. He was sent to Bengal in 1701 as Diwan.
Rise of Murshid
Hadi was given the title of Murshid Quli Khan on 23 December 1702. After which the emperor also gave permission to change the name of Makhsusabad to Murshidabad. When Aurangzeb’s coffers started getting empty due to constant wars, it was Bengal that made the royal court financially prosperous. During Aurangzeb’s time, he had a lot of influence with the imperial government.
In 1717, the emperor gave Quli Khan the title of Zafar Khan and made him the governor of Bengal. In this way, at the same time held both the post of Subedar and Diwan. And then Murshid Quli Khan declared himself the Nawab of Bengal and became the first independent Nawab of the province. In 1717 the capital of the province was shifted from Dacca to Murshidabad.
