The objective of the e-shram portal is to create a comprehensive database (NDUW) of workers in the unorganized sector in the country.
The e-shram portal was launched on 26 August 2021. The intention of the government is to provide the benefits of welfare schemes to all the workers of the unorganized sector of the country through this portal. The registration of all workers in the unorganized sector will be completed in the current calendar year. This will help the political leadership to formulate an evidence-based policy for the underprivileged sections of the society.
94.11% workers earning less than 10 thousand
According to the latest data, a total of 27.69 crore unorganized sector workers are registered on the e-shram portal. The data shows that the workers in the unorganized sector are living in extreme poverty and most of them come from the backward community of the society. The data shows that 94.11 percent of workers in the unorganized sector registered on the portal have a monthly income of less than Rs 10,000. At the same time, the earning of 4.36 percent is between Rs 10,001 to 15,000.

74.44 percent of the workers registered on the portal come from the backward sections of the society. Of these, 45.32 percent belong to OBC, 20.95 percent to SC and 8.17 percent to ST category. The number of general category workers is 25.56 percent.

In terms of age, 61.72 per cent workers are in the age group of 18 to 40 years and 22.12 per cent are between 40 and 50 years. 13.23 percent workers registered on the portal are above 50 years of age. At the same time, the age of 2.93 percent is between 16 to 18 years. 52.81 percent of the workers registered on the portal are women and 47.19 percent are men.

The top five states in terms of registration are Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha. The main occupation of 52.11 percent of the registered workers is agriculture. At the same time, 9.93 percent work in homes while 9.13 percent work in the construction sector.
