Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh while addressing a virtual event organized by the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) in Mumbai on Monday also stressed on the importance of handling social media advertising responsibly. He said that today there are more than 50 crore social media users in the country, so advertisements should be displayed responsibly.

Can’t ignore user aids
He said that influential and popular persons need to disclose every fact related to advertisers, which is likely to affect the credibility of their presentation. Singh said, these information should be given in such a way that consumers cannot ignore them and they should not be kept in the middle of many hashtags and links.
Singh said that during advertisement in photographs, these information should be clearly visible above the picture and during advertisement in video, these information should be given through audio-visual (video-audio) medium. And during live telecast, information should be given continuously and at appropriate places.

He emphasized that it is the responsibility of the manufacturers, service providers, advertisers and advertising agencies to ensure that their advertisements do not mislead the consumers.
