There was a time when there used to be an umbrella rule of foreign companies in the matter of washing powder in the country. To end this, Karsanbhai Patel of Gujarat planned to launch a product that would fulfill this need of Indians.
Born in 1945 in Rooppur, Gujarat, Karsanbhai Patel graduated in chemistry and started working as a lab technician in a cotton mill. After this, the Mining Department of the Government of Gujarat started functioning.

The year 1969 proved to be the turning point for Karsanbhai. He started using his knowledge of chemistry to end the monopoly of foreign companies. He started doing many experiments with soda ash to make detergent products. A day also came when he prepared such a formula which laid the foundation of Nirma’s business.
This product was very close to Karsanbhai’s heart, so he named the company after his daughter Nirupana’s nickname Nirma. To start it as a product, he started the detergent business by building an office in 100 square feet of the back of the house. In the initial period, detergent was so expensive that it became difficult for middle class people to buy. Realizing the need of the people, Karsanbhai started selling it at Rs.3 per kg. While at that time detergents of foreign company were coming in Rs.13 per kg.
The interesting thing was that along with working, he was also doing Nirma’s business. Taking out time while working, he used to make detergent powder and used to sell it door to door. Due to the quality and low cost of the detergent, it became the choice of the middle class people as well.
Nirma’s advertisement took her across the country
Due to his job, he was not able to give full time to this work, so he decided to leave the government job and expand the business. To make it reach more and more people, took the support of television advertisement. The lines of the advertisement ‘Sabki Pasand Nirma’ became famous from house to house. Due to advertisement and mouth publicity, its demand started increasing rapidly.
This advertisement changed the condition and direction of the company. In the year 1995, Karsan Patel started the Nirma Institute of Technology in Ahmedabad. In 2003, he established the Institute of Management and Nirma University of Science and Technology.
Presently both the sons of Karsanbhai Rakesh Patel and Hirenbhai Patel are handling the company. In 2010, Karsan Patel was awarded the Padma Shri by former President of India, Pratibha Patil. Today Nirma is one of the largest manufacturers of soda ash in the world.
