Dr. BR Ambedkar Family History: Today is the birth anniversary of Babasaheb Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, who is called the architect of the Constitution. His full name is Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar. He was born on 14 April 1891 in a Mahar family in Mhow Cantonment near Indore in Madhya Pradesh, while his native village is Ambravede under Mandangarh tehsil in Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra. His father’s name was Ramji Rao and grandfather’s name was Maloji Sakpal.
Babasaheb’s childhood name was Bhimrao Ekpal alias ‘Bhima’. His father Ramji Rao used to work in the army. Father Ramji was a big follower of Kabir Panth, while his mother Bhimabai was also a domestic lady of religious nature.
Bhimrao was the last child among the 14 children of his parents, 11 girls and 3 boys. Of the 13 children before Bhimrao, only 4 were alive, Balram, Anandrao, Manjula and Tulasa, while the rest of Bhimrao’s siblings had died prematurely.
On November 20, 1896, at the age of only 5 years, the shadow of his mother had risen from his head. After this his aunt Meera took care of the four sisters and brothers. Since childhood, Bhimrao was of sharp intellect. He was very bright in studies. Impressed by his unique talent, a favorite Brahmin teacher gave him the nickname ‘Ambedkar’, which later became an integral part of his original name.
In the year 1908, when Bhimrao was only 17 years old, he got married. He tied the knot with Ramabai. At that time Ramabai was only 14 years old. Even after marriage, Dr. Bhimrao went abroad and took higher education and then returned to the country and engaged in service.
