The Central Government has extended the subsidy received on 12 gas cylinders every year under the Ujjwala Yojana for one more year to the beneficiaries of the Ujjwala Yojana. More than 9.5 crore people of the country will get the benefit of Rs 200 per gas cylinder every month. Its burden on the government will increase by Rs 7,680 crore. The average LPG consumption of a PMUY consumer has increased by 20 per cent from 3.01 refills in 2019-20 to 3.68 in 2021-22. The government launched the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana in May 2016 to provide free LPG connections to adult women from poor households.
Subsidy is transferred to the bank account
This subsidy is deposited directly into the bank account of the eligible beneficiaries. Government oil marketing companies ie Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) are already giving this subsidy before May 22, 2022. Due to geopolitical tension, there has been an increase in the international price of LPG. In such a situation, the PMUY beneficiaries will be protected from the high prices of LPG.
