Green hydrogen is a carbon free and mobile energy source that can complement electrification. Hydrogen can be used as a fuel for electrical equipment.
Know about National Green Hydrogen Mission?
The government of the country is continuously working on the Green Hydrogen Mission. This time a big announcement has been made regarding this in the budget as well. Presenting the budget, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that the government is continuously working for the Green Revolution. For this, the National Green Hydrogen Mission has been started. The government has approved Rs 19,744 crore for the Green Hydrogen Mission.
The Finance Minister said that the government is serious about energy sources and wants to reduce dependence on petrol-diesel, coal or other fossil sources. For this, the government has formally approved the National Green Hydrogen Mission. This will reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.
today’s big news
Let us know, what is green hydrogen, what is the mission of the government regarding this, what are the goals set by the government and how will it affect our lives…
What is green hydrogen?
Green hydrogen is considered the cleanest fuel. This is because no carbon footprint is left by its production or use.
Hydrogen is very easily found in nature, available in combination with other elements. Like in water (H2O) it is available with oxygen. That is, it can be separated from water. This process is called electrolysis.
Using renewable energy such as wind, water or solar energy, water is broken into hydrogen and oxygen and hydrogen is extracted, then it is called green hydrogen. Green hydrogen production has significantly lower carbon emissions than gray hydrogen.
Green hydrogen can be used to decarbonize areas that are difficult to electrify. Such as steel production, cement production etc. Doing this will help limit climate change.
At present, hydrogen is used in big industries like oil refineries, steel, fertilizers, bulk chemicals. One important use would be blending it with CNG and PNG to offset their carbon emissions.
What is Green Hydrogen Mission?
Green Hydrogen Mission is a mission to reduce dependence on conventional energy sources and to emphasize on renewable energy. It is about November 2020. The third Renewable Energy Investors Meet was held. In this, PM Narendra Modi spoke about renewable energy. After this, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman put forward its roadmap in her budget speech on February 1, 2021. Then PM Modi announced this mission on the Independence Day of 2021. On February 17, 2022, the Union Ministry of Power notified changes in the policies of Green Hydrogen and Green Ammonia. On January 4 this year, the cabinet has approved the incentive package to enter the market.
What are the goals of the government till 2030?
- Connected renewable energy capacity addition of about 125 GW in the country
- Development of green hydrogen production capacity of minimum 5 million metric tonnes per annum
- Total investment of more than eight lakh crore rupees, creation of more than six lakh jobs
- Total reduction in fossil fuel imports worth over Rs 1 lakh crore
- Reduction in annual greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 50 million metric tons
What will be the effect on you?
Green hydrogen has many uses. They can be used in industries. Simultaneously it can be stored and distributed in existing gas pipelines to power home appliances. It can transport renewable energy, such as converting it into a carrier such as ammonia, a zero-carbon fuel for shipping.
Green hydrogen is a carbon-free and mobile energy source that can complement electrification. Hydrogen can be used as a fuel for electrical equipment. Electric vehicles can also run from it.
The special thing is that unlike batteries, hydrogen fuel cells do not need to be recharged and as long as they have hydrogen fuel, they do not go down.
