Why drinking beet juice every day is a healthy habit? Learn

When it comes to healthy eating habits, we often talk about eating fruits and vegetables, and experts also recommend avoiding juices.

But, according to a new study, drinking beet juice promotes a mix of oral bacteria associated with healthier blood vessels and brain function.

1. Study

According to a study published in the journal ‘Redox Biology’, beets – and other food items including lettuce, spinach and celery – are rich in inorganic nitrates, and many oral bacteria play a role in the conversion of nitrates to nitric oxide, which is a substance in blood vessels. and helps to regulate neurotransmission.

The study highlights that older people have lower production of nitric oxide, and this is associated with poor vascular (blood vessel) and cognitive (brain) health.

In a new study conducted by the University of Exeter, 26 healthy older people took part in two ten-day supplementation periods: one with nitrate-rich beet juice and the other with nitrate-free placebo juice, which they drank twice a day.

2. Conclusions

Results showed higher levels of bacteria associated with good vascular and cognitive health, and lower levels of bacteria associated with disease and inflammation. Systolic blood pressure dropped by an average of five points (mmHg) after drinking beet juice.

3. What do experts say?

“We are really excited about these findings, which have important implications for healthy aging,” said lead author Professor Anne Vanhatalo from the University of Exeter.

“Previous studies have compared the oral bacteria of young and old people and healthy people with those of people with diseases, but we are the first to test diets containing nitrates in this way,”.

Vanhatalo added, “Our findings suggest that adding nitrate-rich food items to the diet – in this case through beet juice – can significantly alter the oral microbiome (mix of bacteria) for just ten days.

Maintaining this healthy oral microbiome can slow down the negative vascular and cognitive changes associated with aging over the long term.”

4. How to make Beet Juice?

Take 2 medium sized beetroot, peel and cut into small cubes. Apart from this, peel and cut a 1-inch long piece of fresh ginger. Add them together in a blender and grind into a smooth puree. Add water to adjust the consistency. Garnish with salt, pepper and lemon juice and enjoy it to the fullest.
