Unusual symptoms of vitamin D deficiency

Vitamin D is one of the many nutrients our body needs to stay healthy. It is a fat-soluble nutrient that is produced by the body when exposed to sunlight. The sun’s rays are the primary source of getting adequate amounts of this nutrient as it is present only in limited quantities in food.

Vitamin D has many important roles in keeping our bones, teeth and muscles healthy. A lack of this nutrient can be bad for your physical as well as your mental health. Nevertheless, a large number of people around the world are deficient in this vitamin. Usually, vitamin D deficiency is diagnosed through a blood test, now researchers have found another easy way to track the numbers, that is to do your own tongue test.

    1. Symptoms on Your Tongue

According to a research conducted in 2017 through the Department of Dermatology, Mayo Clinic, Rochester (USA), people who have symptoms of burning mouth syndrome (BMS) are more likely to have fasting blood glucose, vitamin D (D2 and D3) levels. Should get checked. Vitamin B6, Zinc, Vitamin B1 and TSH.

This burning pain or hot sensation is usually felt on the lips or tongue, or is more widely spread in the mouth. Along with this, the person may experience numbness, dryness and unpleasant test in the mouth. The pain may increase while eating something. The researcher suggests that the condition is related if the root cause of the problem is not addressed efficiently. The severity of the condition may differ from person to person.

    2. What should you do?

The need to monitor this nutrient increased during the pandemic when it was established that low levels of vitamin D may increase the risk of developing inflammatory cytokines, pneumonia and viral upper respiratory tract infections.

Therefore you should not take this symptom lightly. Although burning mouth syndrome is also associated with other nutritional deficiencies, you may need to visit your doctor to confirm the exact cause.

Other common symptoms of vitamin D deficiency include fatigue, bone pain, muscle cramps and mood swings.

    3. How long do you need to be in the sun to get enough vitamin D?

The Daily Recommended Dietary Intake (RDI) level of vitamin D is 600 IU for people under 70 and 800 IU for people over 70.

By spending some time in the sun every day, your body can make enough vitamin D. The amount of time varies from season to season because of the intensity of sunlight. Spending 10 to 20 minutes in the sun is sufficient in spring and summer, but in winter a person needs to spend at least 2 hours to get the recommended amount of vitamin D.

    4. Other Sources of Vitamin D

Sunlight is actually the best source of vitamin D, but if you want to increase your intake of this nutrient, you can also eat these foods:

    Spinach

    Cauliflower

    okra

    Soybean

    white beans

    fish like sardines and salmon
