Doctors say that liposuction is a way to improve the shape of one’s body. This is not a cure for obesity. Fat people should not undergo this surgery.
On Monday, 22-year-old Kannada actress Chetana Raj died at a private hospital in Bengaluru after complications developed during ‘fat-free’ plastic surgery. ‘Fat-free’ plastic surgery or liposuction is a way to improve the shape of one’s body. Dr. Rashmi Taneja, Senior Consultant, Plastic Surgery, Fortis Hospital, Delhi Vasant Kunj, said that this surgery is “to remove fat (fat) accumulated in different parts of the body like thighs, hips, buttocks, abdomen, arms, neck or back. Is performed”
He said that this surgery is done for people who are overweight and have a body mass index (BMI) less than 30. These people can diet and exercise but cannot get rid of this fat.” Now if people can get rid of the fat stored in the body, then should a fat person also get liposuction?
Dr. Taneja says that liposuction is not a cure for obesity. He said, “There are many medical problems associated with obesity. If a person’s BMI is above 30, then liposuction is not recommended as the risk of surgery increases. The more fat is removed, the higher the risk.”
Liposuction does not reduce obesity
He said, “Liposuction is a way to get rid of accumulated fat but it is not a cure for weight loss. For obese people, undergoing this type of surgery means changing their body 360 degrees which can pose many health risks. That’s why it is important to consult your doctor before getting liposuction.
He advised that bariatric surgery can be done for the obese person. It has been designed for complete and permanent weight loss along with the solution to all the problems related to a person’s weight.
difference between bariatric and liposuction
Through bariatric surgery, a person gradually uses the fat stored in his body and thus it allows weight loss in a very gradual and controlled manner. Along with weight loss, it helps in reducing a large number of weight-related diseases such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol level, joint arthritis, sleep apnea, PCOS and some types of cancer.
Thus, while bariatric surgery is a type of gastrointestinal surgery aimed at reducing weight and weight-related diseases, liposuction is a cosmetic surgery for shaping and contouring the body.
Required to complete liposuction in one sitting
Dr. Taneja said that to reduce the risk in liposuction surgery, it is necessary to complete the surgery in one sitting. “Liposuction involves risks such as blood clotting, bleeding, fluid accumulation in different parts of the body,” he said.
