FSSI is preparing to replace the label on packaged food with star rating. Although the star rating process is used worldwide in New Zealand and Australia. Let’s know about it.
We all know that nutritious diet is very important for good health. We buy only after looking at the amount of nutrients on any product. But what if ratings are written on these things instead of labels. Recently, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is preparing to adopt Health Star Rating (HSR) instead of warnings on packaged things. This means that people will not understand how much sugar, salt or other product has been included in a product.
According to experts, this will not alert people about harmful products. According to health experts, only companies will benefit from health star rating. From this it will not be known how harmful the product is for health. A good rating can be taken by showing a good amount of protein and fiber in any product. However, this rule has been implemented in only two countries worldwide.
In the FSSAI meeting on June 25, an official had described HSSR as the only option. Whereas in the meeting held in January, consumer organizations did not agree. In the meeting of 30 June, FSSAI has decided to conduct a survey by an organization like IIM for the selection of Front of Pack Label (FOPL).
Star rating is applicable in two countries
Actually WHO has written the amount of sugar, salt and calories on all the products. It has been compulsorily implemented in 10 countries including Mexico, Chile. Whereas 30 countries voluntarily. At the same time, star rating is applicable in New Zealand and Australia. According to a Carolina study, having a high warning label on any product reduces the sales of that product. According to George Cherian, chairman of NGO Cuts International and member of the FFSAI Central Advisory Committee, it is necessary to have a label in the product. This lets the consumer know that what he is buying is beneficial. At the same time, this does not happen in star rating.
