Poor Sleep Excessive Gadget Use Adverse Effects On Children And Teenagers Health
Screen timing has increased a lot in modern lifestyle. It is having a negative impact on adults, teenagers and even small children, which is a matter of concern. Studies conducted by many institutions have indicated that teenagers are suffering from physical problems due to excessive use of gadgets and poor lifestyle. According to a report by MedPlus, only 10 percent children in the country are able to get complete sleep. Children’s health is being badly affected due to lack of sleep.
According to a MedPlus report done some time ago, 62 percent of school-going teenagers in India get less than 6 hours of sleep. Of these, 32 percent are children who sleep less than 5 hours. According to the study, family problems, nightmares, study stress and excessive use of gadgets are the reasons for lack of sleep in children. Due to lack of sleep, the risk of serious health problems has increased in children.
Increase in the problem of obesity
Professor Majid Ejati of Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health has done a detailed study of the last 50 years regarding changes in the lifestyle and obesity of teenagers. According to which, in 2020, about 124 million children and teenagers across the world were suffering from obesity and this is 10 times more than in 1970. Professor Majid holds excessive use of gadgets and less physical activity responsible for this.
The problem of obesity is increasing among teenagers in India too.
Talking about obesity among teenagers, this problem is increasing rapidly in the country too. According to the report, since 1975 till now in India, there has been an increase of 600 to 700 percent in the problem of obesity among teenagers. According to the World Obesity Federation, by 2030, approximately 2.7 crore children in the age group of 5 to 18 years in India may suffer from obesity.
Increased risk of eye related problems
Due to increased screen time, children’s eyes are also being adversely affected. According to a report by Parkland Health, there has been a 100 percent increase in the need for glasses among teenagers in the last ten years. The report says that continuously looking at nearby things like mobile or tablet is also the main reason for this. According to a study, about 13 percent of school going children in India are suffering from the problem of myopia i.e. not being able to see distant objects clearly.
Effect on sleep quality
A study by Harvard Health says that teenagers are now getting much less sleep than they used to get two decades ago. According to this study, about 50 percent of children are able to get less than 7 hours of sleep. Children’s sleeping time has not only reduced, but the quality of their sleep has also been adversely affected, because the blue light emitted from mobile devices etc. affects the brain, due to which the quality of sleep also gets affected.
