CCMB Director Vinay Nandikuri said that with increasing data, it is becoming increasingly clear that there are many factors, including genetics, immunity and lifestyle, which are responsible for susceptibility to COVID-19. CCMB’s expertise in population studies is proving useful in understanding these details of the COVID-19 pandemic.
An earlier study revealed that a specific DNA segment associated with severe infection with COVID-19 was found in 50 percent of South Asians, compared to 16 percent of Europeans. However, the study concluded that the genetic variant responsible for severe COVID-19 status among Europeans may not play a role in susceptibility to coronavirus among South Asians, the release said.
On the other hand, 91,702 new cases of corona virus infection have been reported in the country on Friday. According to the Union Health Ministry, 3,403 people have died due to infection across the country in the last 24 hours. Along with this, 1,34,580 people have also been cured of the infection.
